Language Disorders

Language can be divided into 3 areas:

  • Expressive Language
that which a child is able to say to communicate meaning. This may include pronunciation, sentence structure (syntax), vocabulary and grammar.
  • Receptive Language
that which a child is able to understand of another person’s communication who speaks the language that the child has learned or is learning.
  • Language Use
how the child uses the words and sentences that they know to communicate. For example, greeting, requesting, commenting and questioning.
